In the summer of 2012, the Syfy channel premiered Jersey Shore Shark Attack. This made-for-TV disaster film takes place at the Jersey Shore, where a group of guidos and guidettes are worried about the safety of their beloved boardwalk after a real estate developer seeks to take control of it. Enter the albino bull shark, a prehistoric species that has somehow resurfaced and is now wreaking havoc on the beach, consuming anyone who dares venture into the water. With the beach overrun by bloodthirsty sharks, the gang must band together to try to protect their territory and, most importantly, their tans. At the heart of the film is JD (played by Jeremy Luke), a laid-back lifeguard with a bit of a rogue streak. Along with his pals (including Joseph Russo as Paulie Balzac), he spends his days drinking, flirting with the local girls and generally reveling in the carefree beach lifestyle. But when the sharks begin to attack, JD and his crew must be quick to act in order to keep their friends and family safe. Making matters worse is the arrival of the shady businessman Moretti (played by Jack Scalia) and his cronies, who seem more interested in profits than people. While Moretti plans to replace the boardwalk with a shiny new casino, JD and his friends aim to defend their home turf using any means necessary. As the death toll rises and the sharks grow increasingly brazen, the group must use their wits and their beach-themed weaponry (in one memorable sequence, JD wields a chainsaw, Beach Boys-style) to try to fend off the monstrous beasts. Faced with impossible odds, they realize that the only way to defeat the sharks is to work together - and to come up with a plan that is as ridiculous as it is dangerous. Overall, Jersey Shore Shark Attack is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the beach party movies of yesteryear, complete with surf music, skimpy swimsuits, and plenty of cheesy one-liners. While the CGI sharks can sometimes look a bit hokey, the film has a sense of humor about itself that makes it hard to resist. The film takes its inspiration not only from Jaws, but also from the pop culture phenomenon of MTV's Jersey Shore, which was in its prime during the time that the movie was released. As a result, the film is full of references to the show, from the characters' stereotypical catchphrases ("GTL, baby!") to their over-the-top personalities. Despite these nods to reality TV, Jersey Shore Shark Attack never takes itself too seriously. It's a fun, silly movie that is perfect for a summer night in, when all you want is to kick back with some popcorn and watch some ridiculous shark-based carnage unfold. If you're a fan of B-movie horror or nostalgic beach movies, Jersey Shore Shark Attack is definitely worth a watch. Just be prepared for some truly absurd shark attacks and perhaps the occasional cringe-worthy moment. And whatever you do, don't try this at home - it's never a good idea to take on a shark with a beer bottle.
