Jason Voorhees, the infamous masked killer, returns in the eighth installment of the Friday the 13th franchise. In Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason is resurrected once again and sets his sights on the bright lights of New York City. The film begins with Jason being revived via electrical shock while chained up at the bottom of Crystal Lake. He soon makes his way onto a boat filled with high school seniors on a graduation trip to New York City. Unfortunately for them, they are not alone on the ship as Jason has also hitched a ride. As the boat makes its way to New York City, Jason wreaks havoc aboard the ship while picking off his victims one by one. The remaining survivors, including Rennie (Jensen Daggett) and Sean (Scott Reeves), manage to escape in a lifeboat and make their way to the streets of Manhattan. From there, the film becomes a cat and mouse game as Jason chases the survivors through the streets and landmarks of NYC, including Times Square and the subway system. Meanwhile, the survivors try to find a way to stop Jason once and for all before he can do any more damage. The film features the trademark violence and gore of the series, with Jason dispatching his victims in a variety of creative ways using his trusty machete, as well as other deadly tools he finds along the way. As the survivors try to evade and defeat Jason, they also have to confront their own personal demons and fears. Rennie, for example, has a traumatic past involving a near-drowning experience that has left her with a paralyzing fear of water. This vulnerability makes her an even more enticing target for Jason. The acting is, as expected, not necessarily the film's strongest suit, but the cast delivers the requisite amount of screams and terror. Jensen Daggett is a solid lead as Rennie, portraying her vulnerabilities as well as her inner strength. Kane Hodder, who played Jason in several of the franchise's films, also delivers a convincing performance, despite the limited range afforded by the character's silent, lumbering persona. The film's highlights include the iconic scene of Jason walking through Times Square, as well as some suspenseful moments aboard the city's subway system. While the film's title may promise a full-fledged rampage through the Big Apple, some fans may be disappointed by the limited amount of time spent in Manhattan proper. Overall, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is a fun and entertaining entry in the long-running franchise. Though it may not have the same impact as the earlier films in the series, it still delivers on the expectations of fans who crave the signature mix of gore, suspense, and jump scares that the Friday the 13th franchise is known for.
