Steven and Tempest Riley are best friends with Vic and Helen Powell. In fact, they don't have any other friends, which makes Vic and Helen's constant confessions about fears of infidelity increasingly grating. So, to force their friends to talk to each other instead of only moaning to them, Steven and Tempest each pretend to ask the other person to have an affair with them, in the hopes this will frighten them into talking to each other. Instead, Steven and Tempest become much more wrapped up in their friend's spouse's life than they'd like and find it difficult to undo the damage they've created. Worse, Vic and Helen now expose the existing problems in Steven and Tempest's marriage, which are only growing worse under the strain of their son Alan leaving for college in only a month. "Above and Beyond" is filmed in an experimental, hyper-minimalist style, emphasizing the disconnect between not only the characters from their friends and spouses, but their disconnect from reality as well.
