Clara's Heart

Clara's Heart is a 1988 coming-of age-drama starring Whoopi Goldberg as the lead character, Clara Mayfield. Living in Jamaica, Clara comes across the wealthy Leona Hart (Kathleen Quinlan), a woman who has retreated to the island to help overcome the death of her young daughter. In the process, Leona turns her own world upside down as she leaves both her husband (Michael Onktean) and son (Neil Patrick Harris) behind in the U.S. in order to personally heal from the loss. Clara soon learns about Leona's loss and the two women gravitate towards each other, despite the fact that they are from two different social classes. Soon, Leona is so enamored with Clara that she hires her as her maid in the United States and the Jamaican becomes a second mother of sorts to Leona's son, David, who has been emotionally neglected during the process of his sister's death. Clara is soon able to dispense life experience and nurturing to the boy that comes from a harsh past that no human should ever endure. Clara's Heart was directed by Robert Mulligan. MORE [EDIT]
