Vampire Dog is a 2012 Canadian comedy movie directed by Geoff Anderson starring Collin MacKechnie, Julia Sarah Stone, and Amy Matysio. The film was made for children but it is a fun watch for all age groups. The movie revolves around a 12-year-old boy named Ace (Collin MacKechnie). His love for animals brings a new member into their family, Fang, the vampire dog. Fang is a small white dog with magical powers. He has been passed down as a pet through generations of Dracula's family. When Fang's powers start to escape to the outside world, Ace's club, the school bullies and his neighbor Mr. Warburton (Ron Pederson,) who's a hunter, try to capture him. They believe that Fang is a threat to society. Ace learns that Fang is a vampire dog and he wants to help him live a normal life. He tries to help Fang to control his powers, and not to crave blood. Ace also proves to his dad that he can take care of a pet by giving Fang a place to live under his bed without anyone noticing. Fang is a dog that's scared of everything, including the sound of dogs barking on TV. But, he is also unbelievably strong and has powers that haven't been seen before. For instance, Fang can fly, become invisible, and transform himself into different creatures, which he uses for his advantage. Throughout the movie, Ace and Fang bond and go through countless adventures together. In some scenes, we see Fang standing on his hind legs, reading a book or surfing the internet. Eventually, the townspeople and Ace's dad realize that Fang is not a threat when he rescues them from bullies, and they see he has a kind heart. Despite being a comedy movie, there are a few heartwarming moments in the film. The relationship between Ace and his father, Norman (Mark D. Clive), is tested but mended throughout the film. Ace's dad, a stickler for the house's rules, becomes more understanding, and his bond with his son grows stronger. The movie's message is that love and kindness come in different shapes and sizes. Love is not just for humans, but animals too. It also teaches children about taking responsibility, and how even small animals like Fang can make a difference in the world. The castings and performances are delightful for the most part. Collin MacKechnie as Ace steals the show with his natural acting and charming smile. Amy Matysio as Sheri is excellent as Ace's aunt, and Julia Sarah Stone as Ace's friend, Sierra is believable as the supportive friend. The special effects and graphics are decent for a movie of this genre. Fang's powers, especially when he becomes invisible, are impressive. The makeup and costumes are well done, Fang's fangs and Werewolf costume, especially. The soundtracks are catchy, with the opening track 'Vampire Dog,' instantly grabbing the viewer's attention. The tracks throughout the movie sync well with the scenes and add character to the movie. In all, Vampire Dog is a worthwhile movie for both children and adults. It is a funny, light-hearted movie with enough jokes to keep viewers of all ages entertained. The plot may be predictable or cliché, but the message of love and friendship will make it worth your while. It's no classic, but for a kid's Halloween movie, it's a fun one. The movie is rated G and has a runtime of 91 minutes.
