Basket Case 3: The Progeny is the third instalment in Frank Henenlotter's cult-horror series, Basket Case. Released in 1992, this campy, eccentric, and outrageous horror-comedy stars Kevin Van Hentenryck as Duane Bradley and Annie Ross as Granny Ruth, respectively.

The story begins with a fresh chapter in the lives of our main characters. Duane Bradley, the reluctant guardian of his formerly conjoined freakish twin brother Belial, has now reconciled his relationship with his monstrous sibling. The expectant parents, however, are not alone. Ruth's friend is none other than Uncle Hal, another advocate for “unique individuals," who resides in a secluded mansion that is large enough to accommodate Ruth's extended family of eccentric and unique personalities, which she lovingly calls her "little ones."

Granny Ruth and Duane help Belial and his equally grotesque girlfriend Eve (an enlarged, fleshy, headstrong character similar to Belial) get ready for impending parenthood. Throughout the film, chaotic incidents ensue as the family's journey spirals down a rabbit hole of hair-raising experiences and peculiar events that make up the charm of this movie application.

Amid all the screwball pandemonium, underlying themes of acceptance, empathy, and unconventional family love are woven gently into the narrative. For all its apparent macabre, the Basket Case series has always managed to inject heartfelt moments and an odd sense of warmth into its boundary-crossing storylines. This particular sequel is no exception and brings our eccentric crew's journey to a fitting, and equally absurd, conclusion.

Basket Case 3: The Progeny also explores the implications of societal prejudices toward those markedly different or outside the realm of the perceived norm. Refreshingly, it does so in a way that doesn't take itself too seriously, making it not only a captivating watch but also a thought-provoking commentary.

Meanwhile, Kevin Van Hentenryck continues his role of Duane Bradley with an endearing understated comic performance adding a distinctive charm to his complex, unstable character. Not to mention, returning director Frank Henenlotter does an excellent job maintaining the unique vision and peculiar aesthetic that has earned the Basket Case series its cult status.

While its unique blend of horror, comedy, kitsch, and strangely heartwarming family dynamics won't be for everyone, fans of the franchise and viewers who appreciate offbeat, genre-bending films will find a lot to enjoy in Basket Case 3: The Progeny.
