Backcountry

Backcountry is a 2014 horror-thriller film directed by Adam MacDonald. The movie follows a couple, Jenn and Alex, who embark on a camping trip in the Canadian wilderness. Their relationship is strained due to Alex's lack of preparation and enthusiasm for the trip, and Jenn's desire for a more adventurous excursion.

The couple's journey takes them deep into the remote forest, where they encounter unpredictable wildlife and confront the unforgiving wilderness. While on the trail, they meet a mysterious and experienced hiker who warns them of the dangers that lurk in the woods but is dismissed by Alex as paranoid.

As the couple continues their trek, they become lost, and their situation goes from bad to worse. Though Alex takes lead on the hike, he proves himself to be ill-equipped to handle the challenges they face, and the once idyllic trip turns into a fight for survival.

The tension builds rapidly as the couple becomes more and more lost, running out of food and water, and faced with the constant threat of a looming black bear. The cinematography and sound design create a sense of palpable dread as Jenn and Alex attempt to escape the dense forest safely.

In addition to the elements of survival horror, the film explores the psychological toll of being lost in the wilderness, with haunting visuals and sound design that play on the characters' fear and isolation.

Jeff Roop and Missy Peregrym deliver nuanced performances as Jenn and Alex, respectively, capturing the tension and emotional complexity of their relationship as well as the physical challenges of surviving in the wilderness. Nicholas Campbell is also excellent as the enigmatic hiker who the couple crosses paths with on the trail.

Backcountry is a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave audiences both chilled and emotionally invested. Although the film is often brutal and terrifying, it grounds its tension in the emotions of the characters, making it a journey that is all the more horrifying to endure.
