The X Games are an annual extreme sports event held by ESPN that was started in 1995. Much like the Olympics, the X Games are split into summer and winter events that showcase the best in the world in action sports. The first X Games were held in Rhode Island and featured BMX, skateboarding, and motocross events. The Games grew in popularity in the 1990s along with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, as he chose the X Games as the venue to showcase his 900 trick in 1999. Shaun White gained acclaim in the winter X Games and eventually went on to win gold in the Olympics. Other extreme sports athletes who gained acclaim in the X Games include Bob Burnquist, Dave Mirra, Chad Muska, Bucky Lasek, and Matt Hoffman.
