Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

Who Wants to Be A Millionaire is a television game show where contestants answer multiple choice questions testing their trivia knowledge to try and win a million dollars. The American version began with Regis Philbin as host until the show was syndicated for day time airing. The questions get progressively more difficult as the potential gain increases. The contestant can decline to answer a question and walk away with the amount they had won to that point, or lose some of it as they go down to certain checkpoints where that amount is guaranteed. The show is notable for its use of lifelines: devices the contestant can use to help them on a question they are having trouble with. Each contestants gets one each of the three different types of lifelines: Ask the audience, where the audience is polled for what they think the answer is; 50/50, where two wrong answers are eliminated, leaving only the correct answer and one wrong answer; and Phone A Friend, where the contestant can call someone they know and ask them for their advice on the question.
