United States of Tara

United States of Tara is a comedy-drama TV series created by Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno and Jennifer's Body, for the Showtime channel that follows the ups and downs of artist Tara Gregson (Toni Collette) as she tries to deal with the struggle of raising a family while handling her dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder. Whenever she's stressed, whether it's from a fight with her husband or the aftermath of her two teenaged kids, she transforms into one of her alternate personalities: T, a wild and flirty teenager who is a little too touchy-feely with pretty much anyone around; Alice, an old-fashioned '50s housewife; Buck, a male, crude, beer-drinking Vietnam veteran; Gimme, a creature of a thing; and Shoshana, a hippy-dippy therapist. The only problem is that she has no memory of what her alters do and has to rely on the support of her family to rein her other selves in. Thankfully, she has a calm and patient husband, Max (John Corbett), who doesn't bat an eye to find his wife calling herself Buck and guzzling beer. Their troublemaking daughter Kate (Brie Larson) tends to enjoy the antics of T, much to Tara and Max's dismay, and their sensitive and old-fashioned son, Marshall (Keir Gilchrist), is trying to come to terms with his sexuality. Tara's sister Charmaine (Rosemarie DeWitt) helps whenever she can, though she resents the attention Tara gets and is definitely the first to express her doubt in regards to whether or not Tara is faking her disorder. United States of Tara takes a different look at the life of an American family in its own twisted yet funny way. MORE
