The Wombles is a 1970s British children’s television series that aired on BBC. The Wombles is about fictional, pointy-nosed, furry creatures of the same name, who act as environmental protectors. They collect and recycle trash in ingenious ways, sporting the motto “Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish.” Although, according to the series, Wombles exist all over the world, The Wombles focuses on the lives of a group of Wombles that live in Wimbledon Common in London, England. Until a certain age, Wombles are nameless and then, afterpassing that age, each Womble chooses a name from Great Uncle Bulgaria’s atlas, leaves Miss Adelaide’s Womblegarten, and begins the communal work of collecting and recycling human garbage. The story is told from the point of view of the less-than-motivated Ornico. Although Ornico is far from the hardest-working Womble, he gets up to his own fair share of adventures, exploring the above-ground world of the humans. The Wombles was a nationally-known television show in England, with plenty of young fans.MORE
