The Wallflower is a Japanese-style animated ("anime") series based on the manga series written by Tomoko Hayakawa. The Wallflower follows Sunako, who is dealing with her own personal image, as she is made fun of for her looks constantly. A tragic occurrence with her first real love leads her to disavow all things "beautiful." Sunako's aunt, disturbned by Sunako's unfortunate new outlook on life, decides to take things into her own hands. As the owner of a huge mansion, she rents out rooms to four handsome students. She challenges them to turn Sunako into a beautiful woman in exchange for free rent. Sunako becomes physicall beautiful, but something is missing inside of her. Sunako's attitude about herself hasn't changed much, and her interests haven't evolved into anything "ladylike." The story develops as they try to make Sunako beautiful on the inside.
