The Ellen show is a situation comedy starring Ellen DeGeneres that aired on CBS from 2001 to 2002. DeGeneres stars as Ellen Richmond, a big city woman who's moving back to her hometown. Her life has gotten slower, and she's not sure she's ready for it. Her mom, Dot (Cloris Leachman), and her sister, Catherine (Emily Rutherfurd), are just the slightest bit crazy. Her high school prom date, Rusty (Jim Gaffigan), thinks he'll be able to kickstart their relationship. This task is made more difficult by the fact that Ellen is a lesbian. Lesbianism is a part of Ellen's character, but not a focus of the show as in Degeneres' previous sitcom. Created just three years after "Ellen," Degeneres' smash hit sitcom, which broke sexual ground with its controversial fourth season, "The Ellen Show" was a bit of a disappointment.
