The Dana Carvey Show

The Dana Carvey Show was a shortlived sketch show on ABC starring SNL superstar Dana Carvey. Though it was cancelled after only seven episodes, it was critically acclaimed and maintained a small, loyal audience. Looking back, it's clear that the show was ahead of its time, featuring the acting and writing talents of future superstars Steve Carrell (The Office) and Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report). Other members of the writing staff included screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, Legendary stand-up and actor Louis C.K., Jon Glaser, Dino Stamatopoulos, Talk Show host Spike Feresten, and Robert Carlock. As executive producer, SNL alum Robert Smigel acted as a sort of creative director. In 1996, ABC ordered 10 episodes of the Dana Carvey Show. Low ratings combined with the continual inclusion of controversial material led to its cancellation after the airing of the seventh episode. Sponsor's weren't crazy about having their products associated with Bill Clinton breastfeeding dogs. Both Smigel and Carvey wanted to air a content warning before the show, but ABC thought it would scare Sponsor's away. MORE
