The 60's

The ‘60s is a made-for-TV miniseries developed by NBC that moves through the 1960s decade of social and political upheavals as it focuses on two distinct families, the Herlihys and the Taylors. The Herlihy family is a middle class family in Chicago whose hopes were for football scholarships, potential jobs, and marriages for their three children are thrown aside by the diverging paths. Their youngest, the shining Katie (Julia Stiles), becomes pregnant and leaves her family in the aftermath to follow the rock musician father (Donovan Leitch) to San Francisco in the psychedelic, flower-power upsurge in the West coast. Her oldest brother athletic Brian (Jerry O’Connell) joins the Marines when his scholarship to Notre Dame falls through and ends up becoming one of the scarred ghosts of veterans from the Vietnam War. Their intelligent brother Michael (Josh Hamilton) takes the peace rally approach, ultimately protesting and campaigning with politicians of the era’s Democrats. The Taylors were a prominent and civil rights oriented family in the deep South but when the minister father was shot and killed, Emmet (Leonard Roberts) takes the opposite path of peaceful protests and joins the Black Panther group, often clashing violently with the police. The ‘60s acts as a retelling of all the potential lifestyles and paths anyone could have experienced during that period in American culture with an underscore of popular musical classics and remembrances of the historical events that shaped the nation.
