Tess of the D'Urbervilles is a 4 hour British television miniseries adaptation from 2008 based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel from 1891. The story follows the poverty stricken young country woman Tess (Played by Gemma Arterton) who tries to improve her life and social status upon realizing her family is connected to the extremely wealthy D'Uberville family. However she ends up enduring heavy heartache and shame as she falls in and out of love with Alec D'Urberville (played by Hans Matheson) and Angel Clare (Eddie Redmayne). The script for this adaptation was written by David Nicholls. He wanted to focus on Tess as not just a 'passive victim,' but an 'active, forceful and opinionated young working class woman.' It was directed by David Blair. Unlike most BBC television shows it was shot on actual 35mm film as opposed to digital film.
