Tales of the City is a miniseries from 1993 that was produced by Channel 4 in the UK and aired on PBS in the next year. It was based off a novel of the same name by Armistead Maupin, which is the first in the Tales of the City novel series. Written by Armistead Maupin and Richard Kramer, the miniseries was directed by Alastair Reid and produced by Alan Poul. In the mid-1970s, Mary Ann Singleton (Laura Linney) moves to 28 Barbary Lane in San Fransisco. She quickly becomes friends with her neighbours and their quirky friends, including Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), Mouse Tolliver (Marcus D'Amico), and Mona Ramsey (Chloe Webb). Tales of the City depicts life as it really was in San Francisco in the 70s, including homosexuality, drug use, and many underground cultures and behaviors. Although the book is applauded for it's openness, the miniseries led to federal funding cut threats for PBS despite an edited-for-nudity version being made available. The miniseries led to a sequel, More Tales of the City, which aired on Showtime in 1998 and a third in the series, Further Tales of the City, which aired on Showtime in 2001.MORE
