Survival School follows the Air Force SERE program, which is an incredibly rigorous five-month-long training program. 500 men apply to the program but only 47 are admitted - of them, only half will finish. The ten half-hour episodes of Survival School follow the trials of these men as their survival and endurance skills are pushed to the limit. SERE stands for Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape, and the applicants are given challenges in all of these categories; from having to fend for themselves in an isolated forest where they have to gather food and build shelters, to navigating a freezing cold ocean. Crossing deserts, jungles and mountains, the airmen face many dangers, including dehydration, hunger and possible hypothermia. Even the film crew needed two weeks off after shoots, to recover!
