Sealab 2021

Sealab 2021 is a cartoon that aired on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block for four seasons. Produced by Atlanta based 70/30 Productions, the show repurposed animation from Hanna-Barbera’s 1970’s cartoon Sealab 2020, one of HB’s less popular efforts from the 1970’s. Sealab 2021’s creators Adam Reed and Matt Thompson came up for the show’s concept when they were both working at Turner as production assistants. One day, they found a tape of Sealab 2020, and recorded their own dialogue to match the cartoon’s lip movements. Five years later, they had a hit on their hands. The show centers on a stationary underwater facility, manned by a cast of borderline insane characters. The leader of the Group is Captain Hazel “Hank” Murphy (Harry Goz), who is completely unfit for service. The crew bends to his whim, and those whims never involve anything remotely akin to science or research. After Harry Goz’s death in 2005, the character was replaced by Captain Bellerophon “Tornado” Shanks, who was voiced by Goz’s son, Michael. MORE
