Lister has no power or real responsibilities, but he has does have the good fortune of being in suspended animation when a radiation leak kills the entire crew. He wakes up three million years in the future, the single remaining member of the human race. In the three million years he's been out of commission, Frankenstein's kittens have survived and reproduced, evolving into a humanoid species of intelligent felines. Lister embraces this startling turn of events, and Red Dwarf follows the daily lives of Lister, Holly, Cat, and the holographic version of Arnold Judas created by Holly to keep Lister from losing his mind.
