Queer as Folk is a dramatic television series on Showtime that centers around the lives of a group of gay men in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia as they look for love, friendship, and happiness. Although the show mostly focuses on Michael Novotny (Hal Sparks) as he struggles to come out in the workplace and meet a nice man who can get his mind off best friend, the hot shot advertising executive, Brian Kinney (Gale Harold), Queer as Folk has an ensemble cast and all the characters have equal screen time. Michael's other close friends include the flamboyant Emmett Honeycutt (Peter Paige), the down to earth everyman Ted Schmidt (Scott Lowell), and the very young Justin Taylor (Randy Harrison). Lawyer Melanie Marcus (Michelle Clunie), artist Lindsay Peterson (Thea Gill), and Michael's mom, Debbie Novotny (Sharon Gless) complete the close-knit family in Michael's life. Although lovers come and go, these friends are forever. Through the show's five year run, the characters of Queer as Folk deal with all kinds of homophobia and anti-gay politics. The friends also face broken hearts, death, AIDS, and disloyalty with a brave face. The show is one of the first to truly depict gay life, and was very controversial for Showtime when it aired in the early 2000s. Queer as Folk is a remake of a British series with the same name, that aired on Channel 4 in 1999.MORE
I love this show, no matter how sad it was in some parts. It shows real life situations and anybody who can get past the "gay" aspect of it will be able to apply the show's messages in their own life. After I bought the complete series I have turned dozens of people on to the show themselves. I wish that there would have been more seasons then 5, because of how differently I have been able to look at life since I have watched it.
LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SHOW! It has really made me look at life from different people's perspectives and see the wold in a much more positive light. I only wish they would have made more seasons.
