One Step Beyond

One Step Beyond is the ABC TV series where host John Newland examines reported cases of real-life supernatural phenomena. The show aired 9 months before The Twilight Zone, and One Step Beyond fed the public appetite for the paranormal, but with real experiences instead of fiction. With often no solutions or resolutions at the end of the thirty-minute docudramas, the audience was left to wonder for themselves what actually happened in the reported events. John Newland was "your guide to the supernatural", and sought out the spookiest stories of actual events involving things like ghosts, monsters, aliens, and disappearances, acting the stories out in dramatizations. Newland directed the dramatizations, which were known for subtle, balletic camera work. The show had episodes dealing with the premonition of death in the Lincoln Assassination, disasters like tidal waves, and abilities like astral projection.
