North and South is a historical drama directed by Brian Percival based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell that centers on Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby-Ashe), a young proud woman whose life is turned on its head when her father (Tim Pigott-Smith) leaves the clergy and takes the family into the north of England and into a world so unlike the south. Unlike the bustling metropolis of the cities in the south, Margaret finds the north to be full of harsh, uncouth working class people, even a local magistrate and mill owner John Thornton (Richard Armitage). Life in the north is not as they expected as Mrs. Hale (Lesley Manville) slowly succumbs to an illness, Margaret is pulled into an investigation regarding her soldier brother, Frederick (Rupert Evans), and the mill workers begin to strike and riot. North and South is a look at the differences in class and gender, especially as Margaret struggles with her growing love for John, as the climate around them grows hostile.MORE
