New Amsterdam is a drama TV show that briefly aired on Fox - from March 4, 2008 to April 14, 2008. The series centered around John Amsterdam, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, a quick-witted, know-it-all NYPD homicide detective with one secret – his immortality. Amsterdam, who was originally a colonizing Dutch soldier back in 1642, sacrificed his life for a young Native American girl, who in turn gave him back his life, as well cast a spell on him so that he would not age until he found his one true love. For over 400 years, Amsterdam has roamed “the new world,” outliving friends, lovers, children, and dogs – thirty-six by Amsterdam’s count. In addition to his current job as a detective, Amsterdam has also worked as an attorney, professor, physician, furniture maker, CIA agent, and painter.
