My Three Sons

My Three Sons is the ABC sitcom TV series that follows Steve Douglas (Fred MacMurray) as he raises his three sons Mike (Tim Considine), Robbie (Don Grady), and Chip (Stanley Livingston). Steve is a aeronautical engineer and widower who is trying to raise his kids by himself, with help from his housekeeper Uncle Charley and their maternal grandfather Bub O'Casey. Mike is a college student, Robbie is in high school, and Chip is the youngest. The show began in black-and-white, and took chances like mixing different genres of comedy and drama, and using cross-talk, where the off-screen characters voices are heard underneath the main soundtrack. When Mike leaves home, Steve tries to adopt Chip's friend Ernie Thompson (Barry Livingston). When the family moves to California from the Midwest, Robbie marries his girlfriend Katie Miller (Tina Cole), and Steve later marries Barbara Harper (Beverly Garland), and welcomes her 5-year-old daughter Dodie into the family.
