Middlemarch is a television mini-series that aired in 1994 and was produced by Masterpiece Theatre. Set at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the small English town of Middlemarch, the story follows the lives, relationships, and politics of its inhabitants. Adapted from the literary classic by George Eliot, the mini-series focuses on a number of the town's residents, including Dorothea Brooke (Juliet Aubrey), a naive but socially conscious young woman who marries Reverend Edward Casaubon (Patrick Malahide) with the hopes of improving herself intellectually. Meanwhile, Tertius Lydgate (Douglas Hodge), a doctor who is new to town, sets out to modernize the medical practices used at the new hospital, which brings him to the attention of politician Nicholas Bulstrode (Peter Jeffrey) and Rosamund Vincy (Trevyn McDowell), the town beauty. Rufus Sewell also appears as Will Ladislaw, Casaubon's cousin who is secretly in love with Dorothea. All their stories entwine and show the social and economic divides present in Middlemarch.MORE
