Meerkat Manor

Meerkat Manor is a documentary series that originally aired on the Animal Planet network on September 2, 2005. The program was produced by Oxford Scientific Films and is narrated by Sean Astin in the United States. Meerkat Manor follows the lives of several groups of meerkats in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Viewers will learn that each group is led by a mother-and-father team who bear the only offspring in the group. Each of the meerkat bands are distinctly different and the show's producers even give them names. There is the Whiskers family, which is followed most closely throughout the series, as well as the Lazuli and the Commandoes. Meerkat Manor leaves out the repetitive events that make up most of the meerkat's lives, like foraging and grooming. Instead, the show's crew highlights major dramatic events including the death of a well-loved matriarch and group rivalries. The show enjoyed considerable success and was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards. MORE
