Lou Grant is a dramatic television series spin-off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show following Lou Grant (Ed Asner) after he is fired at the WJM television station and starts anew in Los Angeles as the city editor for the local newspaper. The show is an hour-long drama, a shift from the half hour comedy of The Mary Tyler Moore show reflected in a more somber Lou character. Lou is in charge of a team of reporters that include Joe Rossi and Billie Newman, with each episode's plot involving assigning the two reporters news stories to cover. The show explored the lives of the people in the stories and the people who cover the stories. Societal topics were frequently examined, as stories would cover issues like mental illness, prostitution, environmental damage, and nuclear proliferation. Journalism issues were also a touchstone for the show, as the show delved into the conflicts and challenges for reporters. Asner would win an Emmy for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" for his work on Lou Grant. The show was one of two spin-offs of The Mary Tyler Moore Show along with Rhoda.MORE
