Keeping Up Appearances

Keeping Up Appearances is a British sitcom on BBC, starring Patrticia Routledge as Hyacinth Bucket, Judy Cornwell as Daisy, Geoffrey Hughes as Onslow, Clive Swift as Richard, Josephine Tewson as Elizabeth, Mary Miller as Rose, David Griffin as Emmett, and Shirley Stelfox as Rose. Hyacinth Bucket is an eccentric, social-climbing snob who spends her time visiting stately homes, hosting “executive” style candlelight dinners, bragging, and name-dropping. Unfortunately for Hyacinth, her working class sisters, Daisy and Rose, keep getting in the way. They, along with Daisy’s lazy husband, Onslow, and the senile father of the three girls, Daddy (George Webb), have a knack for showing up at the most inopportune moments and embarrassing Hyacinth. She tries to avoid them at all costs, but that is not to say that others do not try to avoid her, likewise. Most people either dislike or are afraid of her, exclaiming ‘The Bucket Woman!’ when they see her, before running away. Including her own brother, and next door neighbor, Emmett is among the many that run from Hyacinth. Whenever she sees him, she breaks into song, because he produces and directs an amateur operatic society and she wants him to give her a part. Hyacinth’s social climbing antics make Keeping Up Appearances a riot, 44 episodes of pure fun. MORE
