Gimme a Break! is the NBC sitcom about housekeeper Nellie Ruth "Nell" Harper (Nell Carter), who works for the Kanisky family, Carl Kanisky (Dolph Sweet), Katie (Kari Michaelsen), Julie (Lauri Hendler), and Samantha (Lara Jill Miller). When Nell's friend Margaret Kanisky (Sharon Spelman) passes away, she agrees to be the housekeeper and help with the home duties in the fictional suburb of Glen Lawn, California. Carl is the portly police chief who isn't in touch with his feminine side and has trouble raising 3 daughters. Nell comes to act as a surrogate mother, letting the girls confide in her and acting as a buffer between them and their out-of-touch father. Nell is an outspoken joker and loves witty banter and poking fun at Carl, but is also caring and loving to the family. The show also featured many guests, like a young Joey Lawrence as Joey Donovan, as well as appearances by celebrities like Whitney Houston, Andy Gibb, and Pat Sajack.
