Gantz

Gantz is a Japanese anime series based on the celebrated manga series of the same name from creator, writer, and illustrator Hiroya Oku that tells the story of Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, two high school students who are killed by a train and transported to a mysterious afterlife where they must track down and kill aliens on Earth. In life, Kurono and Kato were two good-natured young men. They lost their lives attempting to save a homeless man who had accidentally fallen onto the tracks of a train while drunk. After dying, they awake in a barren apartment, along with several strangers. The apartment is unfurnished except for a black sphere at one end of the room they come to know as Gantz. After attempting to escape the room to no avail for some time, Gantz opens up and reveals the reason they've been brought there. There is a hostile alien presence on Earth, and Kurono, Kato, and their new friends will have a chance to earn back their mortal lives if they can exterminate the alien presence.
