Flash Gordon (1936)

Flash Gordon (1936) is the film serial that showed the adventures of comic-strip hero Flash Gordon. The comic strip began in 1934, and have led to a successful franchise. Flash Gordon is a handsome Yale graduate who enjoys playing polo. When Earth is bombarded by meteors, the scientist D. Hans Zarkov believes he knows their origin. He creates a rocket ship and kidnaps Flash and his friend Dale, bringing them with him to the planet Mongo, where their adventures unfold. In 13 installments, the series followed the speedy hero through milestones like his first visit to planet Mongo and his encounter with Ming the Merciless. The series starred Buster Crabbe as Flash Gordon, Jean Rogers as Dale Arden, Charles B. Middleton as Ming the Merciless, and Frank Shannon as Dr. Alexis Zarkov. The serial became a classic, even being selected to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
