Extreme Engineering is a documentary television series on the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel that describes how engineering marvels around the world are designed and constructed. Known as Build It Bigger in the United States, the series showcases extreme construction projects and hypothetical architecture that may one day become reality. From subway systems in America to cities in pyramids, the show hopes to inspire awe in its viewers for the type of radical engineering being made. The show was developed out of the success from Engineering the Impossible, a two-hour special that premiered on the Discovery Channel. Created and written by Alan Lindgren and produced by Powderhouse Productions, the special featured three engineering feats - the Gibraltar Bridge, the Millennium Tower, and the Freedom Ship - describing their feasibility and production. The special earned the Discovery Channel not only the Beijing International Science Film Festival Silver Award, but its second-highest, weeknight rating for 2002.
