Doogie Howser, M.D. is a dramatic comedy on ABC that focuses on the life of Doogie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris), a sixteen-year old who also happens to be a skilled doctor. From a young age, Doogie was interested in entering the medical profession. Receiving a perfect score on his SAT at age six, he was placed on a fast track to graduate high school and college. At age fourteen, he became the youngest doctor in the United States. However exciting being a doctor is, Doogie often wishes that he could lead a normal teenage life. His best friend, Vinnie Delpino (Max Casella), acts as Doogie's lifeline to the world outside of the hospital's windows. Doogie struggles to gain respect in the medical world while also yearning to have a typical teenage life with his girlfriend Wanda Plenn (Lisa Dean Ryan) and young friends. Although a good portion of Doogie Howser, M.D focused on this duality to Doogie's life, many of the episodes dealt with larger social issues, such as racism, homophobia, AIDS, and sexism. Doogie Howser, M.D. was created by Steven Bochco and David E. Kelly, and it aired from 1989 to 1993.
