Daphne in the Brilliant Blue is an anime series that depicts a futuristic earth in which the acts of humanity against the planet have caused global flooding, leading to the creation of a series of floating cities that shelter the remnants of humanity. The series focuses on the adventures of Maia Mizuki, an up-and-coming prominent student who wishes to play a significant role in this new world by becoming a government agent. Contrary to her initial plans, Maia becomes entangled with a cause-driven group called the Nereids and joins their ranks. Maia's adventures with the Nereids make up the core of most episodes; the group is often taking on various tasks that range from aiding in acts of justice in the floating cities to exploring the mysterious depths of the underworld in order to shine light on a very murky and mysterious past. The series unravels as Maia discovers more of the truths that have been concealed from her for her entire life until the winding twists of discovery have made everything she thought she knew an uncertainty.
