Coupling

Coupling is a sitcom that aired on BBC2 from May of 2000 - June of 2004. It revolves around a group of friends as they meet, fall in love with each other, and turn to each other for help navigating the dangerous terrain of relationships and sexual adventures. Although the show focuses mostly on the blossoming relationship between Steve Taylor (Jack Davenport) and Susan Walker (Sarah Alexander), Coupling truly features an ensemble cast and all the characters get equal screen time. Susan and Steve's friends include Steve's best friend, Jeff Murdock (Richard Coyle), Steve's ex-girlfriend, Jane Christie (Gina Bellman), Susan's best friend, Sally Harper (Kate Isitt), and Susan's ex-boyfriend, Patrick Maitland (Ben Miles). Although they are ex-lovers and strangers at the start of the series, these six people are brought together by Steve and Susan and eventually become close friends by the end. Each episode mostly focuses around an issue that two of the main characters are dealing with, whether it's an awkward sexual encounter, a marriage proposal, or a pregnancy. The episodes typically feature the group of friends split into two groups; the guys analyze the situation from their point of view at a bar while the girls do the same over glasses of wine. They six friends eventually come together at the end of the episode to reach a conclusion to the situation. Coupling was written by Steven Moffat and led to an American remake that was canceled after only four episodes. MORE
