Commander In Chief was a drama series that aired on ABC and starred Geena Davis, Kyle Secor, and Donald Sutherland. The show featured Geene Davis playing America's first female president, Mackenzie Allen. Originally elected as the first-ever Vice President, Allen rises to inherit the position of Commander in Chief when the President (Will Lyman) dies from a sudden cerebral aneurysm. Speaker of the House Nathan Templeton (Donald Sutherland) despises Allen and believes that she is not capable of handling the job. He tries to sabotage her Presidency at every turn. The show was both lauded and criticized for its portrayal of a female President. On one hand, Davis’ portrayal of a strong, independent-thinking leader was positive. However, critics pointed out that the show inadvertently makes the point that a woman could not be voted into office in normal circumstances. After going on hiatus and changing timeslots twelve episodes in, Commander In Chief’s ratings sank and ABC eventually canceled the show after only one season.MORE
