Batman: The Animated Series

Batman: The Animated Series is an acclaimed addition to the Batman cannon that ran on television from 1992 to 1995. The series is beloved amongst fans of the comic book hero because of the dark nature of the show that stayed close to its comic book roots. The show is remembered for the distinct "dark deco" style of animation whereby many of the backgrounds were printed on black paper to accentuate the grimmer, more adult nature of the show. The film-noir style extends to the representations of the characters, who dress in 40s style fashions. The stories include classic Batman characters such as The Joker, Poison Ivy, The Penguin and others at Arkham Asylum, while managing to add levels of depth to these well-known villains. The character of Bruce Wayne was changed as well from a bumbling, self-absorbed billionaire heir, to a more intelligent and somber figure. The character of Robin is also represented in a more adult and modern way than in other forms of media. The show is beloved for the intelligent writing and great art direction, and fundamentally changed the Batman universe due its its popularity. While intended as a children's show, this version of Batman became a hit with all lovers of the caped crusader. MORE
