A Year In Tibet

A Year In Tibet is a 2008 BBC documentary that followed a year in the life of those living in and around Gyantse, the third largest town in Tibet. It focuses on Gyantse's majestic Baijin Monastery and is the first time the BBC has been allowed to film inside Tibet without supervision by the controlling Chinese authorities. The town itself is half a humble of ancient streets and traditional wooden houses and half a modern commercial center. It is a fascinating show that focuses on the human, emotional level of the town. It features such locals as the struggling hotelier, the village shaman, worried that a new rain cannon machine will put him out of business, the 13 year old novice monk attempting to pass his tests, and a young girl unaware that she is to be married to two brothers until the wedding day. The documentary shows all these people and more, and gives the outside world an awareness of just how the Tibetan people cope with living under the imposed Communist rule of the Chinese. MORE
