A Walk to Beautiful

A Walk to Beautiful from PBS follows five women in Ethiopia as they struggle to rebuild their lives. The women suffer from obstetric fistula, an injury that occurs in women during prolonged, obstructed labor. The aftermath of the injury forces these women to live in shame and isolation. Ayehu, Almaz, Zewdie, Yenenesh and Wubete live in a part of the world with few hospitals and even fewer roads to get to them. While they survived the near-fatal births of their stillborn babies, they were left with an overwhelming sense of shame and the ostracism of their families and communities. The film follows them as they make the arduous journey to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital for the treatment that could offer renewed hope. Beyond the physical rehabilitation, the women also heal emotionally from the scars left by their families and communities, and even the experiences that led to their pregnancies. MORE
