WOWOW, the first private satellite broadcast station in Japan, was founded in 1991. Based in Tokyo, WOWOW's programming includes the rebroadcast of popular movies and anime series. The network's more popular shows include Big O, Brain Powerd, Carried by the Wind: Tuskikage Ran, Trinity Blood, Cowboy Bebop, Shinreigari/Ghost Hound, Crest of the Stars, Ergo Proxy, X/1999, SHUFFLE!, Paranoia Agent, and Le Chevalier d'Eon. Satellite networks have looser broadcast standards than broadcast networks, and therefore WOWOW is able to broadcast anime with edgier content than other stations. The channel also broadcasts many American series dubbed into Japanese, such as Grey's Anatomy, Medium, Project Runway, South Park, Cold Case, Sex and the City, and The Sopranos.
