UPN (United Paramount Network) was a joint network effort between Paramount Television and Chris-Craft Industries. The two companies put a lot of money and effort into launching the network in 1995, airing promotional advertisements for the network around the clock on subsidiary networks and channels. The network's first broadcast was a two-hour pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager, which got tremendous ratings, but would never get the same kind of viewers ever again. In fact, none of the shows to air during the first year of UPN would live to see a second season. The network's largest rival would forever be The WB network by Warner Bros. Over the years, UPN just couldn't compete with the WB ratings race. UPN had a short glimmer of hope in 2001 when they acquired two widely popular shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Roswell. With the ending of both shows in 2002, the network came back to life with America's Next Top Model and Veronica Mars, but the success of UPN dwindled as Viacom split into two companies and UPN became property of CBS Corporation.
