The Science Channel is a cable and satellite TV channel created by Discovery Communications that focuses on all aspects of science, whether it is related to space, technology, prehistory, and animals. Launched originally as Discovery Science in the fall of 1999, it was renamed in 2002 in order to update the scientifically focused channel while also bringing in its newer content, such as the reality-based Survivorman, the Discovery Channel-shared Mythbusters, the behind the scenes How It's Made, and the over the top Extreme Machines. Though the Science Channel is known predominantly for its TV series, it also shows a variety of specials and miniseries devoted to the most intriguing science topics, such as the theories of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, the potential prophecies of science fiction authors, and the science of Star Wars.
