San Diego Zoo is a privately operated zoo run by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego that is one of the largest zoos in the world with well over 4000 animals of at least 800 species, including the rare giant panda. Established in 1916 after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition abandoned its exotic animal exhibits, San Diego Zoo is known for its Conservation and Research for Endangered Species in order to help save the unfortunately growing number of rare and endangered species not only housed and cared for within the view but those across the globe. The San Diego Zoo is a major proponent for community awareness and works hard with the San Diego community and the zoo community at large in order to promote conservation and protection. Since the creation of the Panda Research Station in 1996, the San Diego Zoo has been well-known in sharing video footage and offering interactive exhibits to show what the elusive pandas are like first hand.
