Oscar De La Renta is one of today's most well known and respected fashion designers. He was born in 1932 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. When he turned eighteen years of age he left the Dominican Republic to study painting in Spain. Engulfed in the romanticism of Europe he quickly developed a love of fashion. It was soon after his schooling that he started sketching for some of the leading Spanish fashion houses. His talent at sketching landed him an apprenticeship with world-renowned couture desighner, Cristobal Balenciaga. This internship led him to his first real job in the fashion industry as the assistant to couture designer Antonio Castillo at Lanvin in Paris, France.
