The Open Society Institute (OSI) was created by investor George Soros in 1993 in an effort to support his foundations in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the former Soviet Union. He started his foundations in 1984 as a way to help countries move away from communism. The institute is a predominantly left-leaning and is a private operating and grant making foundation. Open Society's primary aim is to shape public policy to promote democratic governance, human rights and economic, legal and social reform. OSI is diligent in building alliances that cross borders and continents to tackle issues such as combating corruption and human right abuses.
