MSNBC is a cable station that provides 24 hour news coverage via opinion segments and interviews in addition to traditional news programs. Started in 1996, MSNBC takes its name from a mixture of Microsoft and NBC, the two parent companies that serve as partners in the overseeing of the network. News coverage is a competitive monster, and MSNBC has crawled and scraped its way up to become a household name, one of the leading cable news networks. One notable leap came with the coverage of the 2008 Presidential election, anchored by political mainstays Keith Olberman, Chris Matthews and David Gregory. The broadcasts, and their analysis helped the network's ratings soar by 158 percent. Shortly thereafter, MSNBC brought political analyst Rachel Maddow, a Rhodes Scholar, on board to anchor The Rachel Maddow Show, an opinion based program that has become a signature face of their prime time lineup. Whether the source of praise or criticism, MSNBC has grown to have a reputation as a liberal voice, much in contrast to some of the other networks, namely FOX NEWS. Such a difference in political outlook has brought the network into the forefront of many debates and playful jabs by political commentators throughout the media landscape.
