The Mascot Pictures Corporation was a small film production company from the 1920s and 30s known mostly for creating B westerns and film serials. It was formed in 1927 by the film producer Nat Levine. Nat's first success had been 1926's serial The Silent Flyer. They created the first serial to include sound, 1929's The King of the Kongo. The production company was located in the upstairs of a contractor's business on Santa Monica Boulevard. Mascot was so small that they had to rent all its equipment and facilities from other companies. Mascot popularized the singing cowboy and musical western film genres. The famous Hollywood actor Gene Autry got his start in the Mascot picture The Phantom Empire. Mascot eventually merged with Consolidated Film and Monogram Pictures to become the larger Republic Pictures. MORE
