Graffiti Research Lab, also known as G.R.L., was founded by Evan Roth and James Powerly and is 'dedicated to outfitting graffiti artists, writers and protesters with open source technologies for urban communication'. The G.R.L. group conducts experiences in and outside of the lab to develop and test a broad range of different experimental technologies. The Graffiti Research Lab is credited and well-known for intenting the LED Throwies, which is a form of light art that is constructed from light-emitting diodes, and is considered to be the inspiration for the mooninites that advertisers distributed around the Boston and Cambridge areas.
