Facebook is the social networking website to beat, founded by Harvard computer programmer Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. The site now boasts more than 500 million users, who have the ability to create a personal profile with all their vital statistics, add other users as friends and send each other messages, including special notifications whenever they change any facet of their profile. Furthermore, the option is available to join common interest organizations, arranged by seat of education, workplace and other criteria. Co-founders with Zuckerberg include his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Membership to the site was first made exclusive to Harvard students, but was soon expanded to include other colleges in the Boston area and finally to the general public as its popularity increased.
